Good food gives us immense, reliable pleasure and sustenance in so many ways. Research, planning and anticipation. The thrill of trying something new and serving it up to family and friends. The satisfaction of sharing the preparation itself with others, from young children carefully sorting ingredients, and tasting them too, to older relatives maybe showing us a better way, with memories gleaned from the years. Cooking together.
Food is love in action, every aspect of it, from the sensual satisfaction of holding a ripe fruit in our hands, to the colour and texture of a lovingly presented family meal. The magical process of sifting flour, the tempting sizzle of good oil and butter in a hot pan, all the delicious smells - even a pungent burnt offering can give rise to laughter. What other daily activity can give so much deep pleasure?
