    Crafting with Linen Scraps

    July 19, 2019 2 min read

You may remember that we give boxes of our linen scraps away for just the cost of postage? We’re happy to provide our linen off-cuts in varying weights and textures to sewers and crafters of any persuasion, and we’re even happier to see how these creative folks transform what would otherwise be waste into something useful and beautiful.

Here are a few examples of what people are making, with some words from the makers themselves.

    Sandy, Bolinas, CA

“Having graduated from art school in ’68, I lived in many phases as a clothes designer in LA. When LA became a bit much I moved to West Marin and began life as an Organic Farmer in ’76 with my husband, also way ahead of its time. I switched from designing clothes to making quilts and simple things for home use. Now with children and grandchildren, I’m again making some clothing. Thanks to Tricia, who supplied me with beautiful linens, I made some sweet little girls clothing.” ~Sandy D.

    Jennifer,  Pleasant Unity, PA

“I absolutely love receiving your beautiful linen scraps! I work at a nature reserve in Pennsylvania where we offer educational camps, pop-up workshops, and nature-themed family days for kids and adults. When we craft, we like to use recycled and natural materials as much as possible. We made beeswax wraps with wax from our apiary and the linen scraps. Last year, we made fairy houses and the scraps were used for making miniature garlands, fairy blankets, and curtains. In December, we hosted a fire-side herb talk in our historic blockhouse and the largest whole piece of linen I received was used for a rustic table square. It didn't quite cover, but that's the way the colonists would have used it! I also use them at home for patches, making cake topper pennants, and small trinket gift wrap."

    Paula, Blairsville, GA

“Here is a photo of the shopping bags I made with Rough Linen scraps. By now they have been used quite a bit, for Farmer’s Market veggies and grocery shopping, and have been washed a couple of times.

“I used instructions I found in a YouTube video. Here is a link to the video. It makes a nice big shopping bag and is easy to do.

“I had to do a little but of piecing, but tried to keep it at the bottom of the bags. The embroidery was done with a Brother PE800, and sewed on each bag as a panel. The bags wash beautifully, although I do not put them in the dryer, just shake them out and hang outside. I love Rough Linen... I also have a pinny that is full of paint of many colors!!” ~ Paula D.

For the rest of you creatives out there - take advantage! We occasionally send out good-sized scraps for the cost of postage. If you’re interested in finding out when more will become available, please sign up for our email newsletter by clicking here.

Hi, I work voluntarily with a local community group who do historical re-enactment. I would love to get some linen scraps to use when decorating and appliqueing costumes. I have new members coming in shortly and I will be running needlework groups, all of which will be free to those attending. I could really use linen scraps and will be happy to pay postage. I look forward to hearing from you.Thank you

My good friend Laura has a business making totes from fabrics rescued from the landfill sites — she employees a full-time sewing room and her business is called ECHOES IN THE ATTIC. She started it after an epiphany to ‘give back’ after surviving her own breast cancer. Here’s her contact information if you could donate any linens for repurposing. thanks… echoesintheattic@gmail.com

The scraps package is absolutely amazing. Much more than I expected and so beautiful, I keep looking at it. Last night I cut a couple of white pieces to make hand towels and washed them, and they dried extremely quickly. Today I will stitch the hems and think about a little embroidery — can you imagine what wonderful Christmas and Hannukah gifts can be made?
